This is a lovely middle-grade retelling of the Chinese folktale "Olive Tree" (or so I've been told) though there's obviously bits of other tales thrown in here and there as well. I love how the seemingly unrelated tales that Minli hears all tie together into one large story. It's a bit childish (obviously, since it's a middle-grade book) but not in a bad way - sweet without being cutesy.

So cool! Perfect for reading aloud to the kids at bedtime over the course of a couple of weeks. So many whimsical stories-within-stories, with lots of magic. (Including dragons. Got to have dragons.) We weren't familiar with Chinese folk tales before this for the most part, so they were new and fresh and fun for us. Awesome way to learn about them. And the illustrations--I swoon at the beauty. You rock, Grace Lin.

This is a beautiful book of a young girl's journey to find happiness and fortune for her family. It is a gentle, magical read, a great read aloud choice for younger children too. I enjoyed the story layers and the sweet generosity of Minli. The pictures and illustrations add to the magic of the whole book.
