I'm typically not impressed when comic book writers try their hand at telling a story in prose form, but Mike Mignola (with the help of Golden) does a pretty good job at making the transition here. It's easy to tell in the first 50 pages or so that this tale could have been easily told in graphic novel form, it really reads as such and I would have almost preferred it be written for that medium. But as the story unfolds and progresses, the intensity heightens and the book becomes very compelling
