This loose retelling of Beowolf set in suburbia seemed promising. I rather liked the first half, but had to force myself through the second. I am now left with the feeling that I did not need to trudge through 305 pages just to be told that "monsters" are relative and in the eye of the beholder.

I'm browsing Goodreads tonight in search of books to nominate for our book group, and just realized I never reviewed this fabulous Beowulf retelling from the perspective of Grendel's mother. It's strange, immersive, dreamlike and memorable — I still think of it often — and though I have little desire to read the author's translation of the original story, I highly recommend this modern, suburban take.

Two mothers and their sons that they are trying to raise and protect. Add in a few harpies. Obviously things don’t go as planned.
I loved the section headings. And the similarities to Beowulf. But without giving anything more away, I found the ending to be muddled and that took a lot away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
