Read it as a fairy tale and you will be satisfied. I did not look for depth and dimension in the characters, and was satisfied. Jessica Day George did a fine job of staying true to the story as Abjorsen originally had it, while flourishing it with impressive and thoughtful details that would take the fairy tale to a whole a new level.

It's no great secret that I adore Jessica Day-George's writing. I find her to be a wonderful craftsman of fairytale and folklore retellings - she does a great job at keeping the heart of the story while enriching it with in-depth characters and flavoring it with her own details. Not terrible, but rather childish. Closer to middle grade than young adult. I like fairy tale re-tellings, and as far as those go, this was decent but nothing special.

Basically an expanded adaptation of the fairy tale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon." I used to love that fairy tale, and I thought the book did the tale justice.
