As we grow older, we weep less and less. It takes energy to weep. In old age neither the lungs, nor the heart, nor the tear ducts, nor the muscles have the strength for great misery. Age is a kind of natural sedative, perhaps because age itself is a misfortune.

Part 1 - A mediocre story that didn't connect with me at all. Two stars
Part 2 - Significantly better than part one but still didn't hold me in thrall. There was also this recurring motif of rhymes that state the story moves onward which was overdone and felt tacked on. Three stars.
Part 3 - Nearly the whole reason this book was a one star read for me. The first two parts are the actual story. Part three is the author talking down to the reader, doing all the critical thinking on our behalf while ...more

I enjoyed the eccentric, independent older women characters and that's about it.
