I appreciate Simon Armitage's efforts to make this classic palatable to a wider audience — and I think it's a good candidate for this treatment, because more people should read it — but in doing so he seems to have sacrificed engagement for accessibility. Verb tense inconsistency and anachronistic word choices not justified by the alliterative verse format don't help matters. With the exception of a few humorous passages, his translation just feels flat. I'll stick with more traditional versions ...more
