A fabulous re-imagining of the tale of Koschchei the Deathless from Russian folklore, a brilliant blending of the real and the magical, and a bittersweet love story (or is it two?). The descriptions of Koschchei's world are wildly bizarre, from buildings that breathe and animated guns to soldiers made of cloth and cars that turn into horses, but Marya Morevna has been preparing herself for the bizarre since the day she saw a bird become a man who asked for her sister's hand in marriage and met t

If you are partial to fairy tales that are dark and slightly twisted then Deathless may be up your alley. I have a fondness for the Slavic deities Marzanna and Chernobog due to nerdy reasons I won't get into on here. A friend knows of this and when she discovered this book, told me about it. It looked interesting so I downloaded it on my Kindle and added it to my "soon to read" list.

I loved the first third of this book. The magical realism, the poetic writing, the amount of Russian folklore crammed into every corner... I hoped I would like this novel based on Russian folktales more than I did. Some books aren’t for me, in some moods, perhaps it’s more about the other books I have been reading than this book. Perhaps I will give this book another try later and l ...more

It's difficult to talk about this book as if it were just another book, because it's so much more. It's a piece of art. The writing is so rich and lush that you want to savor every page. It's the kind of novel that makes a writer want to cry because you know you'll never write anything as well-crafted. The story itself is such an expertly woven mixture of fairytale, folklore, and history that it makes for a unique yet strangely familiar experience. While some parts dragged and other bits felt a
