I read this back in the late summer of 2022. I really enjoy all of Rick Riordan's books, and this was no different. It takes things in a slightly different but complementary direction from the original Percy Jackson series, although there are many characters from the previous series. They also expand the ongoing storyline beautifully.

I'm a sucker/nerd for mythology, so I can't help but get a kick out of all the mythology references. Many I picked up on, but others made me want to look them up. I read this back in the late summer of 2022. I really enjoy all of Rick Riordan's books, and this was no different. It takes things in a slightly different but complementary direction from the original Percy Jackson series, although there are many characters from the previous series. They also expand the ongoing storyline beautifully.

I'm a sucker/nerd for mythology, so I can't help but get a kick out of all the mythology references. Many I picked up on, but others made me want to look them up. Riordan knows his subject matter. I don't want to include spoilers, but this book touches on the various heroes that are integral to the Greek myths, and how they relate to the ongoing story of the battle between the Olympian gods and the Titans. Three new main heroes come to the forefront, all in different places in their lives, but with important legacies and destinies. I love the diversity that Riordan consistently offers in these books. It's so important to kids to see themselves in books and to have their stories become part of the human narrative. For those who may question how people who are not European descent can fit into these stories (and don't understand that the ancient world was as diverse as the modern world is), Riordan expertly crafts origin stories for each character that believably cement them in the narrative. For example, Piper's father is Native American. And Leo is Mexican American. As you know from reading these books, their other parent is one of the Olympian god and their powers and personalities are a good mix of both heritages. I just love the depth of the characters that is on display in these books.

The secondary characters are equally well developed and the plotting is sound, full of humor, pathos and tense suspense. There are tons of great action scenes but also the deep, emotional moments that are equally important to me as a reader as I like to feel connected to characters when I read their stories. There is a lot at risk, and the characters make me root deeply for them. The villains are very evil and have no problems with harming the young people in these books. So there is always a huge sense of risk in this book as with the others. I am happy that the book ends in a satisfactory way but still makes me excited to continue the series.

These might be considered kids/YA books, but I love them just as much (if not more than) as many of the adult books I have read. Definitely a must read.

Much better than "The Red Pyramid," but not quite up to par with the best Percy Jackson books. "The Lost Hero" is an exciting return to Greek (and now Roman) mythology. Unlike "The Red Pyramid," this book features a cohesive, unconvoluted storyline and characters you can actually care about. Riordan remarkably ties in the new storyline quite well with the other Percy Jackson books. So much so, in fact, that you probably shouldn't read this series without having read Percy Jackson.
