I tried, I really did. I wanted to see what the fuss was about. WTF is romantic about this story? The part where he rapes her? Or the part where he slaps her? How about the part where he washes her mouth out with soap? Oh I KNOW! It's where he keeps calling her a whore.

This book took me on some wild ride! I've had it on my to read shelf for a while now but was always intimidated to read it since I've heard far and wide about the abuse the heroine had to endure. Rosemary Rogers rarely disappoints to entertain or shock with a good bit of wtf-ness, and judging by the claims of many reviews, I expected her debut work to be an explosion of forced seduction, hate sex, non-pc abusive heroes and drama galore. What I got was surprisingly run of the mill for a bodice ripper and certainly run of the mill for a Rogers romance.

He rapes the h constantly, she’s raped by om too (I think).
He cheats on the h constantly. 👀
He cheats with the h listening to him fucking another ow in the next room-with thin walls.
He’s cheating on her in the stables while she’s waiting in the carriage.
He gets aroused by countless ow.
She’s with om too, because she’s sick of H cheating.
Lots and lots of ow drama.

This was my very first "bodice ripper." I read it while I was in high school. I was babysitting for a woman and she had it laying around and I started it there. Well, I couldn't possibly ask her to borrow it being the shy, sweet thing that I was ::koff::, so I ended up running out to Waldenbooks (anyone remember Waldenbooks?) and buying it there. I loved the story. I thought it was the sexiest most fabulous story EVER!!! I didn't even think then about the inproprieties in this book...I only care This was my very first "bodice ripper." I read it while I was in high school. I was babysitting for a woman and she had it laying around and I started it there. I loved the story. I thought it was the sexiest most fabulous story EVER!!! I didn't even think then about the inproprieties in this book...I only cared about Ginnie and Steve. Steve and Ginnette. Oh the romance!

Fast forward 35 plus years later ::koff:: and I found the copy of the book as I was in the middle of a move. I picked it up and started to read it and seriously, this book is as true of a page turner, as true of an adventure, as true of a romance as you get. For all you people out there screaming about the rape scenes and the violence, oh shut up. This is JUST A BOOK!!! It's not something anyone wants to repeat or relive. They cannot and everyone instantly would know that. It's just that it tickles all that stuff in your fantasies. There is nothing hotter than to have a man kiss you into doing things that you may or may not want to do, but the decision is taken away from you because of the sheer hotness of it all. Yeah, I know that's not sexy to some of you but to some of us it is and some of you might not admit it but secretly in that part of you that isn't a stuck up prude, you like the idea. I don't want to insult anyone, but this is such a beloved book that I just cannot read anything negative about it.

This is a heavy read at being some 700 plus pages long. I was not bored for a single second in this book. NOT-A-SINGLE-SECOND. Is this book for everyone? No. Is it for young readers? Definitely not. Is it for a good nail-biting, romantic, unforgetable several hours of wonderful reading time? Abso-freakin'-lutely.

Thank you Rosemary Rogers, for a book I will never forget and for a book I will happily re-read when I want to remember what that sort of read can do for me.
