Good grief, it took me like two months to get through this book. Partly that's just because I've been horrible at getting any reading done lately and it's my fault for being lazy. But also ... I don't know, I also just had a lot of trouble getting through this whole book for some reason.

I'm like literally a year behind on reviews now and I'm really ashamed of myself, but hopefully I can get around to properly reviewing this at some point. But for now, here's the short version:

- I thought the pr Good grief, it took me like two months to get through this book. Partly that's just because I've been horrible at getting any reading done lately and it's my fault for being lazy. But also ... I don't know, I also just had a lot of trouble getting through this whole book for some reason.

I'm like literally a year behind on reviews now and I'm really ashamed of myself, but hopefully I can get around to properly reviewing this at some point. But for now, here's the short version:

- I thought the premise was really cool and the world-building was quite interesting. The old photographs gave it a nice touch––although I often felt like the book was struggling to explain the photos and work them into the story in a way that felt forced and unnatural.

- There were a lot of characters, and I had trouble keeping track of them all. I thought all the children's superpowers were cool and original (for the most part, some of them were pretty typical), but it seemed like the story was more focused on their powers rather than on developing them as characters/people. I felt like no one really had a personality and I didn't feel much of a connection with any of them.

- The pacing felt odd to me. I thought it took way too long for the protagonist, Jacob, to actually meet the "peculiar children." Before that there was a lot of unnecessary wallowing in misery and wandering around. Once he met the other characters it was more interesting ... but then towards the end it had the opposite problem, where I thought it felt much too rushed.

- The romance was uh ... well, creepy. (view spoiler) On top of that, it was pretty typical insta-love where the two characters barely knew each other and then out of nowhere were hopelessly in love. It just wasn't very developed or believable.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is very atmospheric, intriguing but at times a little to slow. I love the concept of using found photographs in the book. However at times I felt like the execution was a little sloppy. They over-described the photographs to make them relevant to the story. The author would've been better served to include the photographs and allow the readers to make the connection themselves.

I loved the way this book incorporated pictures into the story. It really helped me to understand the characters and what was happening in the book. The cool thing is that all of the pictures in the book are real photographs that were found at flea markets and from collectors. How cool would it be to find some peculiar old photos and write a story from them! I would've given this book 5 stars, but it's the typical "I don't know that I have special powers" storyline. Still really good! ...more
