An enjoyable and original book. I liked the concept of a gay Cinderella story; fairytales are often retold, but this was an idea I haven't seen before. The story was sweet and compelling. The writing was nice, but not all that interesting in my opinion. Also, Ash was a pretty boring character; I wish she'd a little more personality. But I thought it was a great book and Malinda Lo has a lot of promise.

Ash is a Cinderella retelling done so well that I ended up far preferring this Cinderella story to any previous one (well except I loved the movie Ever After, but as for ones I've read this one is far better).
I loved the lyrical writing and the way Lo takes us into the heart of Ash, the beloved-daughter-turned-household-servant. I loved the interweaving of ancient fairy traditions and the world Lo builds by drawing from many of earth's early cultures.

Today I was in desperate need of a book, and found this one in the low range eBooks. I knew relatively nothing about it, and let me tell you...I am quite conflicted.
This is a retelling of Cinderella. But it quite different in quite a few ways. The book starts out relatively simple, and sad with the death of Aisiling's Mother. Every night Ash-Aisiling's nickname-goes out and sits on her mothers grave. One night she falls asleep and wakes to the sound of pounding hooves. The wild h ...more

I was intrigued by the blurb of this book, since I don't often read books that feature a LGBT narrator, especially one in a fantasy setting. And while I did enjoy Ash, there was some things about it that didn't impress me as much.
The things I did like:
The setting. The world-building was really cool - I liked that 'the old ways' meant believing in fairy tales and fae magic and that the new philosophy was a completely practical one. I thought it was super creative.

Ash is a retelling of Cinderella. All of the basic Cinderella elements are there; the death of her parents, the wicked step mother, the bratty step sisters, the stroke of midnight and the ball.
The difference in this re-telling is that the girl's name isn't Cinderella, it's Aisling. There is no fairy godmother but there are fairies. And they do grant wishes, but with a price. And I have to admit, I grew fond of one of her step sisters, Clara. I wish there were more scenes with the two of them tog ...more

When i took this book out from the library I did not know it was to be about a lesbian cinderella. However I did not feel that that was the main focus in the book. I am not sure the book had a main focus. There was the story of a girl trying to figure out where she belonged and find a way to respect her life, but it seems to be going in one direction and then goes in a completely different, new direction. The book was alright but nothing to call home about.

In all, I would have to say that I absolutely loved ASH. There have been very few books that have made me say, “Wow,” and turn back to the first page to start the story all over again. I can honestly say that this was a book I could not put down and one that really had my mind turning. It’s as much of a romantic story as it is a suspenseful one. The imagery within the pages was spectacular and the book was filled with such color that I’m amazed a little sparkle didn’t fall from the pages as I wa
