Maybe it's just that it's Christmastime, but The Story of Owen reminded me a lot of It's a Wonderful Life. Thematically anyway: the resilience of small communities, the quiet, dutiful hero. Of course, in It's a Wonderful Life, George Bailey's heroism is incidental, and Owen's is staged. Rather more like the creation of the movie than the story within. This part of the novel intrigued me as well - how Siobhan is being trained, basically, as a propagandist. That isn't seen as problematic in this b

Probably one of the few time I wish there was a little romance between the main characters! This was fun and entertaining. Love the way the author wove in real history and places with dragon lore added in to create a new history.

The great--Siobhan's descriptions of people as musical instruments and her very straight-forward outlook on life, the bardic interludes that pepper the narrative--there were some truly lovely passages (at least one moved me to tears).

What if dragons were real monsters attracted to human activity because of the rise in carbon emissions from the Industrial Revolution? How would our history and modern civilization differ? Interesting world-building, witty dialogue, and great characters offer a fresh take on classic dragon lore.
