What Members Thought

Beautiful book in verse, the story of the author's childhood in both South Carolina and Brooklyn (with a brief beginning in Columbus, Ohio). It is the story of her parents, and her grandparents, and other relatives, too. Wonderful poems and nice memories to share.

A beautiful tribute to a family. I was surprised to find myself interested and wanting to know more about what happened to various people and I often flipped to the pictures or family tree to figure out someone's age at death, what they looked like, etc. The poetry format, meant that the story faded off after deaths or other major events, leaving the reader to fill in the blanks.

Jacqueline Woodson is one of the most eloquent and lyrical writers in YA fiction. In this memoir-ish novel, she uses prose poems to tell the stories of her childhood. These poems, so artfully constructed, conjure up Woodson's memories so beautifully. I loved reading about her childhood, which, although very different from mine, was in many ways, so exactly the same. Experiences can be both unique and universal, and Woodson's book illustrates that perfectly.

Can I a-million-star this? Jacqueline Woodson's talentis beyond breathtaking. Beyond comparison. Beyond description. I want to give this book to every person I know. She is just so damn good. Newbery necessary for this one.

Perfect to listen to - not sure what the experience would be like without Woodson's voice.

Not surprisingly, this book is amazing. Jacqueline Woodson is one of my favorite authors, and her lyrical memoir in verse may be my favorite thing she has written. In Brown Girl Dreaming, Civil Rights Demonstrations, the Black Power movement, the meaning of family, faith, and hope all weave into the story of Woodson's coming of age. Her dream of becoming a writer shines throughout--from the very basic learning to read and write her own name, to her first book of poems created on paper bound hers

Wow. Look how far we haven't come. This should be required reading for the human race.

Brown Girl Dreaming builds each beautiful verse into something monumental by its end. I will keep the last four verses in my heart always.
