The paranormal aspects of this book didn't totally work for me. It is, however, a really great commentary on the roles that race, social class, and traditional families (not sure if that's the right phrase, the idea being a mother and a father) play in the criminal justice system. Suma's writing is lovely, but not so much that I felt compelled to bookmark pages and write down quotes. I do think the characterization of Amber and Violet could have been stronger. I consider this one of the best YA books of the year. I enjoyed both the view of the ultra competitive nature of the ballet world and the view of a life in a juvenile detention agency. The element of suspense and magical realism was pitch perfect. The relationships between all the characters provided a fascinating view of all the ranges of human personality. Once I started reading it I could not put it down.

Well-written and thematically rich, but also dark and challenging and not a fun read. I might vote for this in the Mock Printz, but it wasn't one I particularly enjoyed.
