Still one of the most interesting YA novels I’ve ever read. Excellent villain too.

Wanted to see if this is a good as I remember it. Yes, 5 years later, it still holds up. Wish there were more YA novels like this. Smart, but in an easy to read, fluffy package.

Why isn't Susan Juby writing more?

Many, many witty, acutely observant and/or funny bits.

Funny bits, eg:
Teacher Teen Dusk in her vintage track suit hurrying after Mrs. Dekker in her orange poncho: "Mrs. Dekker looked like a Dorito running away from a stoner." (p. 39)

..."Tyler gave him a little jerk of the chin by way of greeting. It's a gesture predicated on the notion that people are paying such close attention that even one's smallest movement will be noticed." (p. 74)

The format took me a little while to get into, but once I did, I was hooked. I think the cover does it a disservice - yes, it’s light and funny at times, but it’s a lot more serious and thoughtful than I would have guessed.

Terrific combination of witty humor and dark truths. Readers into dysfunctional family stories will like this one. I loved the "creative nonfiction" approach & footnotes. ...more
