This modern take on the Russian folktale Vassilissa the Beautiful starts off promisingly enough with a wonderful description of the would-be cool inhabitants living in Brooklyn and the introduction of the protagonist. Vassa hardly feels as though she's part of the family with whom she lives. Both of her sisters had either a different father or mother than she did, and all three girls have different last names. I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I wanted to, but I realized after talking with a friend that it was at least in part because I'd forgotten a lot of things in the source fairytale. There are a lot of references and callbacks to the original that the author included which I had dismissed as random additions to the story. (I don't think the book requires any knowledge of the original tale, but half-remembering it the way I did was more of a distraction than anything else.)

Weird in the way all great fairy tales are and surprisingly hard to stop listening to - hope that's not a Babs Yag trap! Narrated by Madeleine Maby.

I am not the reader for this book. It may appeal to those that enjoy dark fairy tales and whimsical wordplay.
The first 20 pages wow'ed me, but I got stuck. Too much time spent in that "convenience store."
