Once again, magical realism has defeated me. It took me two days to read 30 pages and my mind did nothing but wander. The writing is wonderfully lush, and I think I would have loved the story (from what my book club discussed), but I can't do magical realism. I would probably adore all the imagery if this were in movie form.

This is a wildly powerful book. Each time I read it, I come away with new insight.
Not sure if I don't like magic realism as much as I thought it if it's just that this is a little over written/under edited/repetitive. It's far from bad, but it dragged and then I got irritated. It seemed self indulgent, although also chock full of lovely imagery.

I got just past the half way point with this one and I could. not. finish.
It's not because the book is bad or poorly written. It's just not my bag, baby. The prose is so very elaborate. I had trouble getting back into it every time I picked it up. It took too much effort.

"Their secrets were killing them," as secrets do. Not a spoiler, but toward the end of the book. I was tiring of it (maybe the overly-flowery words sometimes) somewhat until I read this sentence. Somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 stars for me.

This book's has an incredibly rich atmosphere, and the colors, and visual details are beautiful. If I could have read it in one shot, I probably would have loved it, but I put it down and never felt compelled to finish it.
