This book lived up to the hype, the atmosphere was strong, and the feeling of living and experiencing Starr's life felt powerful. I picked it up finally when a Police Union asked that it and All American Boys be removed from their local school's summer reading list. I think both books do an excellent job of discussing the layers of complexity of communities who feel threatened, both in the way that poilce can bring more violence while at the same time being community members who want to do best

Superb! Believe the hype.

Excellent realistic modern novel that deals with very current social issues and gives a realistic depiction of urban life with its joys and heartbreak. Starr is an African-American teen caught between two worlds: she lives in a part of the city subject to poverty and gang violence, but goes to school at a nearly all-white prep school in a more affluent part of town. I loved reading this. It was heartbreaking and hilarious and so so readable. Thomas just nails it.
