I really love the world Holly Black has created with the Curse Worker series. I read through this one early on but felt something was missing - Holly Black's writing was fine - but it was the narration by Jesse Eisenberg that I was missing. I had listened to the first one and think that Eisenberg's voice got stuck in my head as Cassel and I couldn't pull it off in my own head. I didn't like Red Glove as much as I did White Cat (1st in the series). The mystery element here was somewhat overshadowed by the emotional issues that Cassel (our main character) was facing. When he finds out, from Federal Agents, that his brother Phillip was murdered by gunshot while serving as an informant against the curse worker mafia, Cassel is recruited to help solve the crime. Excellent sequel to White Cat. Cassell continues to grapple with his Curse Worker status, coming to terms with what he did in the past and fending off offers from the mob family led by Zakharov who want him to Work for hire. Federal agents come calling and ask Cassell to help them investigate a murder that seems to have been committed by a Curse Worker wearing red gloves. Cassel is stuck between a rock, a hard place and…a few other hard places. And Red Glove continues the excellent series by Holly Black, once again leaving us with a crazy, crazy cliffhanger.
I continue to adore Cassel’s relationship with Sam and his on-going exploration of the world he grew up in and now is a part of. The interactions with Lila were, understandably, tragic. And, as always, the world-building was detailed and well-done.
