Beautiful writing, and a totally unexpected story, although it felt a little... Something. Something that left me feeling engaged intellectually more than emotionally-- thinking, "that's creepy" but not feeling it. But then the ending... If I read it as psychological thriller, it has flaws but also major merits. As horror/fantasy, it's sad but a little reserved and with too much unanswered. I need to mull this one over. I had heard this book was spooky, horror even, but when I started reading I wasn't convinced. Was Ruby's overbearing semi-emotionally abusive behavior the scary part? Creepy and interesting, a story about the (sometimes damaging and suffocating) love of family. There were LOADS of unanswered questions when I finished this one, but I found I didn't mind too much. this started off seemingly normal, then began getting super creepy. the author has a way of making everything seem dreamy and surreal, with startling moments that kept me guessing throughout the entire book. in fact, i was tempted to read the last page early on because i was dying to know how the book would end.

Magical realism in the young adult world. I was definitely involved with these sisters and their at times creepy relationship. I think the author has a great understanding of teenagers' behavior, at times I was laughing out loud. Minutes later, I became horrified by Ruby's apparent control of her surroundings. ...more
