This is another strong title by the always reliable Joan Bauer. I love how her books often examine some kind of career and show teens or pre-teens deeply involved in some activity. In the case of Foster McFee, who just managed to finish sixth grade by the skin of her teeth, that positive activity is baking. Foster has been baking since she got an Easy-Bake oven at four, and she creates her own sweet concoctions. Foster and her mother, a talented singer who has always been relegated to the role o ...more

I loved Joan Bauer's book Hope Was Here, so when I saw this on the Vermont Dorothy Canfield Fisher list this year, I was glad to pick it up. And, once again, Joan Bauer didn't disappoint me. She has a way of developing these positive characters who, yes, have adversity in their lives, but they rise above it and do all they can to overcome. Really love this story. Lots of sadness and pain but it never weighs the reader down. Lots of hope. Love Foster! Excellent protagonist and the supporting cast is fantastic too. A great way to approach many of the big issues of modern times: dyslexia, homelessness, incarceration, domestic abuse, war, and many other issues but with the insight that people still live and go on each day even when faced with trials. Many also remain positive.

I just love Joan Bauer's books! Foster loves to bake, her mother loves to sing, and they are running from her mother's boyfriend. Foster and her mom end up in Culpepper, WV and try to make a new life for themselves. Some pretty crazy characters, but a lot of life lessons are learned, especially about not giving up. ...more

I loved this book and breezed through it. The characters came alive and the cupcakes all sound amazing. There was probably a little too much going on with all the different plot threads, but I loved the people so much that I didn't care. Culpepper is such a fantastic town for Foster and Rayka to land in and I wish I could visit there myself. I really need to read more of Joan Bauer's books because everything I've read so far, I've greatly enjoyed. ...more
