This second book in the FitzOsborne series takes the story to England, where the FitzOsbornes are now exiled following the destruction of the Montmaray castle by the Nazis. Their freedom is now limited by their very proper Aunt Charlotte, who is intent upon getting husbands for Victoria and Sophie, an education for Toby, and a strict governess for the wild Henry. Adapting to English society is not easy, but the FitzOsbornes are going to conquer whatever obstacles are in their path.

I read my review of A Brief History of Montmaray and was reminded that I needed to know more about these characters - Sophie, Veronica, Simon, Toby and Henry- so obviously, I liked them then. After reading this second book in the Montmaray Journals, I have to say that I love these characters, almost as if they have been my neighbors all my life or close family friends. Delightful, despite the grim material (book takes place from 37-39, on the eve of WWII). I really enjoyed the first volume, but this one is better crafted, and a smaller story, to its benefit. I think the FitzOsbornes are up there with the Cassons as a family I sort of wish were mine, although the FitzOsborne's certainly have their share of troubles.

Fans of the first book - A Brief History of Montmaray - will definitely want to pick up this sequel. It loses that odd, isolated feel of the first book, and has a little bit of middle-books syndrome (setting things up for at least one more book), but was still thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely start at the beginning of the series, which I'd recommend to fans of early 20th century historical fiction and I Capture the Castle.
