So many people told me to read this book, but I was worried that it would make me sad. It did. I cried buckets. Jo Knowles writes the most honest families. Heartbreaking and beautiful.

I've read, and enjoyed, all of Jo Knowles' books, so when I saw "See You at Harry's" available on NetGalley, I immediately requested it, and was thrilled when I was approved. After reading it, I feel even luckier. This is a heartbreaking, beautiful book with an unthinkable, horrible twist.

Twelve-year-old Fern narrates the story. She's the third child out of four, all of whom are named for a famous literary character - Fern for the Fern in "Charlotte's Web". Her mother explains why:

"Because Fer

Such a sweet book. Have a hankie ready, it's definitely going to make you sniffle if not outright bawl. But in a good way! 12 year old Fern lives in a hectic family with a dad who's always putting them through embarrassing promotional schemes for the family restaurant, a mom who's become more and more stressed, an older sister who is reluctantly taking a year off from college, an older brother who refuses to admit to his family that he's gay (but everyone already has guessed and is fine with it, ...more

This book is not a long read (for an adult or a fast reader such I was as a kid), but it produces many emotions! I do not want to give too much away, but the book was not really about what I thought it was going to be about at first. I thought another person in the family would pass away for another reason, on first impression. What really happened left me shocked and I cried through most of the remainder of the book. I sympathized with the emotions of the various family members in the aftermath ...more

This is one of the best family novels to come along. While the subject matter, and to say more would be to given away a major plot point, is certainly heavy, the depiction of a contemporary family caring for each other even as they struggle through a difficult time reminded me of the best of Hilary McKay & the Casson family books. The only thing keeping me from awarding a full five stars is the somewhat lengthy mid to end section. On the whole though, I loved it, and am going to recommend it as ...more

Going into this book, I knew it would be sad. It has the subject heading "grief - fiction" for crying out loud, plus I'd read several reviews before ordering it for the library and that gave me a heads up. But sometimes I'm just in the mood for a tear-jerker, so I picked it up and waited to see what would be so devastating.

The first half of the book is the story of a family dealing with the usual upsets of life, with the added hurdle of running a family restaurant. Narrator Fern feels like the i

This book has been getting a lot of buzz, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. I don't see it winning a prize (but what do I know! I can never predict these things), and I think it's too young for the Printz, which is the buzz I've heard.
Anyway, I thought See you at Harry's was really sweet and sad, and I did, you know, cry like a baby when Fern talks to her dad under the picnic table and then finally talks to her mom, but I thought the end resolved kind of strangely, especially r.e. Holden.
