Zusak is my favorite author, and I just noticed that he's now a "goodreads author". New novel came out October 9th! Yay!!
November: I am currently reading this, after a long wait on the holds list, and I'm savoring it (and reading another book while I do that), and I'll probably want to read it again.
Took me a very long time to read, probably due to the complicated structure. I still haven't really figured it all out, but would definitely be willing to read it again to try to pay more attention. ...more

I tried Bridge of Clay three times.
The first two times, I failed.
I wasn't ready, but, the third time was the charm, and what a charm it was.
Zusak noted in interviews that this book would make readers work harder than his previous books, and that was definitely true for me.
But the reward was in the narrative, the description, and the Dunbar boys themselves. Listening to the author read his book was just magical, and so worth the wait for its publication over the years.

Zusak's latest book, the first since The Book Thief, is long and literary. The short and sweet plot is that it's the story of five brothers, raising themselves since their father left after the death of their mother. It's also the story of their parents, how they came to meet and fall in love. It's also a story of grieving, and of brothers who have a complicated relationship with each other. And it looks at art, and having a passion and how to keep it after a loss. Plus bridges and architecture!

I am sad that I can only give 2 stars. While this poetic writing could be classified as masterful, unfortunately it's also tedious. The jumbled narrative plus the scrambled chronology makes it hard to tell where we are at any given point in the story. The ending does offer some reward to the reader but requires a lot of effort and patience to get there.

Gahd DAMN it, Zusak. You are ridiculously brilliant. Ridiculous. How am I going to live without the Dunbar boys, now that I’ve finished the book???
