In keeping with the talented out-of-the-ordinary greatness of Margo Lanagan comes 'The Brides of Rollrock Island' a tale of the sea. Misskaella, born on Rollrock, discovers she has the magical abilites to call out women from within the seals and for a price she is a matchmaker for the men on the island. Sea-swept drama and desires; beautifully told.

Part fantasy, part feminist parable, this beautifully written story is about an island where the men use the powers of a local witch to capture “sea wives,” who are taken from the body of seals and transformed to beautiful women. Imagine the Stepford Wives, but set in a remote fishing village! Lanagan's prose can make you swoon with its precise beauty. She is one of the most elegant writers in YA lit.
