What Members Thought

Totally convincing voice combining hormone-soaked adolescence, cocky intelligence, adrenaline-junkie behavior, a burgeoning ethical sense, and rough-edged vulnerability. Page-turning story. The boy-world portrayed sure seems like a dangerous world to live in. Geographic setting didn't come specifically alive. Commentary on the ending follows spoiler alert.

I probably would have given this book 5 stars had it not been for the ending. :(
There were many laugh out loud moments for me, I loved the characters, and it was an overall smart book. Ryan Dean was witty, endearing, hilarious, and authentic.
But, I agree with another reviewer. The ending felt "tacked on." I would sign a petition asking Mr. Smith for a rewrite of the end of the book.
I'll still recommend this to teens, but maybe with a caveat? ...more

I just finished this (after midnight on a school night - intending to read "just one more chapter" several hours ago and unable to put it down). Will need to revisit after the ending actually sinks in - but this book is utterly real, powerful and heartbreaking. I am better for having read this.

Oh Winger, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
1. Main character Ryan, a 14 year old who because of his high IQ is a junior in his boarding school. Ryan is insecure, witty, sensitive, immature, sex-crazed, loyal, and a pretty good rugby player. Smith's characterization of this adolescent boy is just about perfect. Dead on, my friends, dead on.
2. I loved the visuals in the book--comics, charts and diagrams. They complemented the story so perfectly.

Funny, poignant story of 14 year old Ryan Dean West's junior year at an exclusive boarding school. He is two years younger than all of his classmates, and is on the rugby team (his nickname Winger comes from his playing position); he tries to be very feisty to compensate for his short stature and skinniness and relative immaturity. He actually has quite a chip on his shoulder at times. Ryan Dean loves to draw, and one of my favorite aspects of the book is the frequent doodle-sketches of his frie

3.5 (oh why can't we have half stars, Goodreads?). Hilarious until it wasn't. I quite enjoyed this one - very boy, a little raunchy, very reminiscent of Looking For Alaska, but more earnest maybe, and not quite as clever.

What am I missing? I think everyone loves this book except me!
This is probably a realistic portrayal of what goes on inside the mind of a teenage boy. If it is, I'm very glad I'm not a mind reader because I would have a very difficult time working with teenage boys. Winger's constant comments about being a "loser" and his "perverted" fantasies about almost every female that happened into his field of vision got on my nerves after a while. Aside from that, the book did have some funny moments and ...more
