This was interesting to read soon after Maisie Dobbs, because, oddly enough, they both had the same format: where you start off in the present, after a bit it goes back into the past and details how the main character got to this point, and then it returns to the present. As opposed to Maisie Dobbs, it worked slightly better in this book, because it's a collection of short mysteries, whereas in Maisie Dobbs, it was hard to get back into the continuing mystery after the detour. Alexander McCall Smith has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I've already written about 44 Scotland Street and Corduroy Mansions. However, his most well-known and popular series is the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. It has even been turned into an HBO TV series (which I have not seen).

I am in love with the character of Mma Ramotswe who runs the detective agency in Botswana in this series. She is smart, compassionate, ambitious, and thorough in her investigations. Her cases are very interesting, too. I like how we learn about Africa and African customs and lifestyle through the story. But also, we see how all human nature embodies the same motivations and contentments. Very good. Can't wait to read another.

This was a great book, a masterpiece of sorts because it is so different from other books. You feel like you are in Africa in a slow motion life. The writer has a different writing style than most authors and he makes you feel relaxed. I have read the whole series and all of the books are interesting and keep you waiting for the next one to come out. You learn quite a bit about the people and culture of Boswana. This book is short and easy to read.

I read this upon recommendation from my friend VXR, and I have to say it was not at all what I expected and that I was pleasantly surprised. This is the story of Mma Ramotswe, a woman from Botswana, who uses her inheritance to start her own detective agency. The book has charm, as do the characters, and I will most likely continue on to read the whole series.

This book brought Africa back to me. Alexander McCall Smith writes more than just a story about Mma Ramotswe and her No.1 Detective Agency. He writes about Africa, and it's 'personality'. It was nice to read a story that included all of the 'traditional' aspects of Africa, with a fun story line, and wonderful characters.

I didn't initially like this book but maybe it was the narrator (I "read" it on CD). THen I found the next two books at a book sale and gave it another go. Love the series now.

How does a man know so much about women and life in Botswana, Africa? It's a wonderful book.
