I enjoyed this book, but I don't really understand how it became a Newbery winner. I think that the format may have resonated with the judges, in the same way that this year's Caldecott award went to a book that was an unusual choice.
The story, an interwoven set of monologues and one-scene plays, is quite clever, and gives the reader a feel for the life in a medieval village, but I'm just not sure that it's SO good that it deserves the award. ...more
