This is an interesting fictionalization of an untold story. An odd quirk of Spanish law allowed slaves to be craftsmen, but not creative artists in any medium. Thus Juanico, slave to the great painter Velasquez, is limited by law to helping him to prepare canvases and mix his paints. His dream, though, is to become an actual artist, like the apprentices that Velasquez teaches. Oddly, in this portrayal, he doesn't ever dream of freedom.
