I realized that some of the things I didn't like about Alfred were part of the plot, but they still got on my nerves as I was reading. Also, once the identity of his father was made clear, some of the story fell apart for me. Too much of the "let's make this guy the possible savior of the world, but not prepare or train him" syndrome.
