Like Jacqueline Woodson's Brown Girl Dreaming, I've kept this book in mind due to its rave reviews and awards. Since I read Brown Girl Dreaming and its free verse style recently, I decided to continue keeping The Crossover in mind until I saw it available at my local library.

I don't normally like modern stories told in verse, but in this case the story itself was gripping. I had some very minor quibbles with what seemed like abrupt changes in the way the characters acted, but I think the format helped create that feeling. Without the greater amount of text in a prose telling, the characters are not as fleshed out. So, the rift between the two brothers felt a little rushed, and way in which the rift occurred didn't feel natural.
