This short book takes place during the "Spanish Flu" epidemic of 1918. The author points out the irony of the plague's name, since it was probably an American flu strain which got taken overseas by doughboys, and which spread in the weakened systems of the soldiers and civilians of Europe.
The main character is a 13-year-old girl who has had to quit school to get a job, to help her family. The job is as a servant in Toronto, far from her family home, and she has to pretend to be older.
