I had not read any of this author's books before, but found her writing style and characters to be fascinating. It's unusual to see a YA version of the traditional "caper" story, as a team of specialists sets up to commit a spectacular crime or event of some kind, but in this case there are plot reasons why each of these young characters has had a long, stressful childhood and teen years, giving them the background for the events in the story.

Reading this book started out as a fight because there was a lot to take in. It’s a fantasy world so language and setting is foreign. There are a lot of characters. It might have been nice that instead of maps and lists of the types of Grisha we got instead a dramatis personae to help those poor lost souls like myself who couldn’t keep our Kaz and our Brekkers straight.
But after the first what, 120 pages I found myself enjoying the book. Was it worth the struggle and the heft? (Not a short book) ...more
