I've spent years avoiding this book, and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because some of the descriptions made it sound kind of hokey, like West Side Story set in Oklahoma.
In some ways, this book helped to start the modern YA fiction movement, both because the author was so young when it was first written, and because it was a realistic novel, which most older YA fiction was not.
