Ghost is the second book I've read by Jason Reynolds and I continue to be impressed. He has solidified his place on my list of must-read authors. This was one of the best middle grade novels I've read recently: interesting characters with complicated histories, realistic situations that sensitively portray trauma, and emotional resonance. This is an incredibly quick read, and one that I can recommend to a variety of readers. To me, it's as good as any of the Walter Dean Myers books that I have read, and belongs in that same genre of fiction about kids with as many problems and flaws as good points.
The central character has a lot of anger and fear that he's running away from, but the surprise of finding that he's really good at running, and that there's a point to running, catches him off guard. His life is changed by the teamwork ...more
