While parts of this book could be read as socio-political commentary, I'm quite willing to accept it as just complex juvenile fantasy.
In a town in a land that is not our own, every year the people of the town leave their youngest child as a sacrifice to the witch. The witch is the source of all their woes and sorrows, and everyone knows that only this sacrifice keeps her from destroying them all...only that's not the whole story, or even close to it.
