10 year-old Ada, born with a club foot that was never set, lives with her younger brother, Jamie, and awful mother in London during WWII. When Jamie is going to be sent to the country, Ada escapes with him, and the two are placed with Susan, a woman who originally says she does not want them. Though a war rages on in the country, there is also a war within Ada as she learns to live, and eventually thrive, in a new environment.

Just finished The War that Saved My Life. Christine thanks for loaning to me! I loved this story and was so impressed with the wonderfully complex emotions and internal conflicts. Few books for adults would address these ideas of love and abuse and growth so well. It is now my book to recommend to any one who asks.
