Some people have criticized this book for being racist and oblivious, but my reading of the same text suggests that the author is commenting ON this casual racism in popular culture. For instance, in the story the main character, Omri [which, by the way, is a fairly obscure Hebrew name, and the issue of whether his family is Jewish is never mentioned in the story] has a lot of wrong-headed ideas about both cowboys and Indians.
