I really liked this one, especially the somewhat unusual take on "magic" and its workers. By the end of it, I found myself really looking forward to subsequent stories set in this world.
Cassel is a powerless human in a family where all of the other members have the ability to "curse" other people, altering their luck, their emotions or even their lifespans. Then, he sleepwalks out onto a roof, and his whole world begins to collapse around him, as he finds out that little is what it seems.

Cassel Sharpe is the outcast in his family. He's the only one that is "normal" - the rest of his family are curse workers - people who, when they touch you, can manipulate your emotions, change your memories, alter your dreams, or even cause instant death. Imagine mixing in magic with something like the Sopranos and you have White Cat. Holly Black does an amazing job with setting up the first book in this series. I love her world building. She has managed to create an alternative reality in present day NY/NJ where mob bosses use Curse workers to do jobs for them. The main character comes from a family of curse workers and though you are unaware if he has a curse/ability or not he has learned how to run a con, and work a lie or a scam to his advant ...more
