The book contains an element of fantasy which may be "real". Oddly, that doesn't really matter.
The story is about the effects of eating disorders. The writing is powerful and riveting, but it was so grim and depressing for much of the story that I found it difficult to read.

I imagine Laurie Halse Anderson's research was thorough which makes the downward spiral of Lia in this YA novel even more heart-wrenching. We see life through the eyes of high school senior Lia in the months following the death of her once-best-friend, Cassie.
