The book contains an element of fantasy which may be "real". Oddly, that doesn't really matter.
The story is about the effects of eating disorders. The writing is powerful and riveting, but it was so grim and depressing for much of the story that I found it difficult to read.
I don't know enough about such things to know if the medical syndromes were accurately described, but the main character's grasp on reality was clearly very weak throughout much of the story. The radically unreal body image a

I imagine Laurie Halse Anderson's research was thorough which makes the downward spiral of Lia in this YA novel even more heart-wrenching. We see life through the eyes of high school senior Lia in the months following the death of her once-best-friend, Cassie. The quest to be the thinnest girl at school is only the face of what drives Lia.
