OMG. So good but I just wanted it to end and for Kyra to be safe and I hope to NEVER EVER read this book again. For those of you who watched Friends, let's call this a Freezer Book. (I listened to the audio otherwise I would seriously wrap this book in foil and stick it in there.)

This is a remarkable and powerful novel, written from the viewpoint of a 13-year-old girl who is a member of a polygamous religious cult. To her horror, she finds that the cult's leader and prophet has just betrothed her to her own uncle, a man 50 years older than she and who already has six wives.

Kyra's father has three wives and Kyra has almost twenty siblings. Growing up in a secluded desert community, she's especially fond of Joshua, one of the young boys she sees at school, and hopes that when he's of an age where he can choose his wives, he'll choose her. But before that can happen, the leader of the community announces that thirteen-year-old Kyra will marry her uncle instead -- her father's 60-year-old brother -- and become his seventh wife.
