This may be heresy, but I'm not in love with this book. I read it many years ago, and I just re-read it. I don't think it stands up well. It certainly isn't a complete story, by any measure.
As an allegory about the dangers of forced equality and conformity, I've seen better. In addition, at several points in the story it didn't feel like the author had really thought things through. I remembered why I never really liked this book. It's well written although the story starts very slowly. Then it ends before I'm ready. There must be more. I suppose I'll need to read the companion titles now in hopes that the changes that are about to occur at the end of The Giver are better explained. I appreciate that the book opens questions for its readers but I would have preferred to know whether, like Jonas, the society isn't ready to take on the challenges of changing the way things ar
