Now the war is moving closer to home, and Ha and her family must flee the Vietnam she loves to survive. They travel by boat to make their way to the United States to start a new life in Alabama. This book, told in the form of many poems, is about a year in the life of a young girl, from the fall of Vietnam through her first experiences in America.
Some of the story of the defeat in Vietnam is familiar, but other parts are not. The author lived through this herself, and several of the incidents are based on her direct experiences.

Some have this on their mock Newbery list. Sometimes I think if I liked a book a lot then there is no chance for an award. However, this is a very powerful, emotion filled book - one that should be read and shared. Would pair well with ALL THE BROKEN PIECES by Ann Burg.
