Such an amazing book - why did it take me so long to pick this one up?
Set in 1942, World War II has reached the Dutch island of Curacao where Phillip lives. Phillip sees this as exciting, but his mother is anxious, and decides to leave the island to return to the United states. On the way, their boat is attacked, and Phillip is cast overboard. This novel, taking place during World War II, came out in a tough year for the Newbery Awards. Sounder won, which is okay, but The Cay should have at least made the honor list. The three books which did make the honor list were not exactly enduring classics of children's literature.
