I found much of the book to be well-written, but overall very frustrating, because by the end there is no real resolution. Only the threat of another book, and I do not use the word lightly.
At the start of the story, most of the people in England are dead or dying. Anyone who was an adult at the time of the apparent catastrophe became ill with a disease which makes the victims sort of zombies. They're still alive, but with little brain function, and they eat people whenever possible.
