**September 2017 re-read: 4 stars.**
**Having now read books 2 and 3, the series is utterly worth slogging through the FBS. 1.13.10**
I'm having the most difficult time reviewing this one.
I see the potential to it. The world of tech crumbles under the weight of magic. Factions of power rise in the aftermath, most notably the People (necromancers and necronavigators) and the Pack (shapeshifters created by the Lycos Virus). It's been many years by now since I read this first book, and I'd forgotten almost everything about it but how much I loved the characters. After the second time reading it, and knowing some of the crucial backstory, I found the book even better.

Kate sets out to find out her guardian's murderer and her investigation leads to he ...more

I do believe this is going to be my next favorite urban fantasy/occult detective series.

Count me as a new fan for this series, I'm totally on-board. Kate is an engaging and realistic heroine. This is a gritty, urban paranormal drama that can laugh at itself, while still taking the genre to new heights. I'm enamored with practically all of the characters, intrigued by the edgy Atlanta of the future, and riveted by the problems that Kate had to solve. At this point, I have to admit that I've already finished the third in the series, Magic Strikes, so I'm writing this review rose-tint
