Wow. This was a really fun new fantasy that I just could not put down.

The pacing was break-neck. And by that I mean that the plot of this book could easily spread across two books in the series. I am shocked at how much we got through, because I didn't expect what happened in the end of this book to happen until a bit further down the road.

I knew nothing about this book or about this author's writing and one chapter in and I was hooked. She is an amazing writer and I loved this book from the first chapter. The author's writing just flows and the magic and world building is incredible. The magic is not complicated. Some fantasy books that I love the magic in them is phenomenal but not always easy to understand right away. This one the magic was easy to follow and understand. The politics were not so complicated either and I loved that. Some writers get so wrapped up in their world building and the magic you have to wade through so much to get to the plot of the book. This book was not like that. The magic was amazing and who had what powers was easy to follow and the book was still a powerful book.

Evie is a royal who is treated poorly and disregarded by many. She has a magic that can snuff out someone else's magic. Her mother taught her to hide that magic and never telling anyone what she can do. Her type of magic could cause some very powerful people to want her dead. Her cousin Vasilia is one of those people that would have used Evie's power for her own personal gain and then she would have killed Evie because she could one day be queen. Even though Evie was 17th in line for the throne Vasilia wouldn't take any chances leaving any Blair's alive to take what she wanted..the throne.

This fantasy series is one I would HIGHLY recommend if you are into queens and power hungry relatives. Also get ready for a great magic system. I can't wait to read Protect the Prince next to see what happens next. ...more

I have previously read and really enjoyed Jennifer’s Mythos Academy series and I’ve read one of her Bigtime books as well. But this was my first taste of her writing in the genre for which she is best known. Fantasy. And. Doggone. This was really good! I get why she gets so many accolades for her fantasy writing. Kind of think Game of Thrones if it was set sometime in the 1800s and if the focus was on a much older Arya and if things weren’t quite so brutal and if all the characters had magic. I ...more

Really enjoyed this story and am excited for book 2. I like Winter and this so was rooting for the Winter Queen regardless:) Not that into the gladiator aspect, and a bit odd that someone completely untrained in magic can figure it out in the middle of a fight to the death with a strong and experienced magic user but enjoyed reading anyway.
