Restarted reading this book on Jan. 1st 2019

I really liked this book. I think it took me almost a year to finish but the truth is I started it and then joined a very long challenge and never could get this book to fit to any of the challenges needed so I could finish it. Then the challenge ended and it was just one of those books I wasn't overly excited about picking up again. I joined a buddy read and I restarted this book from the beginning and I am so happy I did. I really love this book. I love the characters still and I love Grace and Sam's relationship.

Sam is now human and not shifting like he once did and he is thrilled to be human all year round. Grace is so happy the cure they used in book 1 worked and the love of her life Sam can stay in his human body forever.

I was so eager to read Linger, Shiver was just stunning, but I think I may have expected too much.
Linger is a much darker story, which was not necessarily a bad thing, but that sense of doom felt uncomfortable. I also felt the story was very choppy as it flipped between narration by Grace, Sam, Isobel and Cole. The short chapters contributed to that sense of unease wonderfully but it again I found it uncomfortable to read. If that was Stiefvater's intent then she achieved it admirably, but I mi ...more

Just finished this and it feels strange to be back in my life. I get so emotionally invested in characters and have to come to grips with the fact that they're not real. This is purely by choice, of course. I don't really believe what I just said. I feel lucky to not have to wait to see what happens. Book 3 is here waiting for me to start. My thoughts: so many povs it took me over halfway to care about Cole and Isabel. Grace seemed very flat throughout, though it's explained later on. I miss the ...more

With this second installment in Stiefvater's Mercy Fall's series, I had a lot of the same issues as I did with its predecessor, but I felt the ending was much more appropriate than the one she concocted for Shiver. I also enjoyed reading about Cole and Isabel much more than Sam and Grace, who although warm and fuzzy, are about as exciting as watching paint dry. Plot-wise I would have liked to see more than Grace's teenage angst issues with her parents and that whole drama was too played-out to k ...more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I loved Shiver, one of the best books I've read in a long time, so I guess I had high expectations of Linger. It doesn't live up to the high standard that Shiver set, but it's still an extremely good book.

From the start you know that Grace will end up as a wolf - the only question is how it will happen. She spends most of the book ill, knowing that something is very wrong and knowing that it's somehow linked to the wolves. The realisation that the wolves tend to die about 10 years after their l I loved Shiver, one of the best books I've read in a long time, so I guess I had high expectations of Linger. It doesn't live up to the high standard that Shiver set, but it's still an extremely good book.

From the start you know that Grace will end up as a wolf - the only question is how it will happen. She spends most of the book ill, knowing that something is very wrong and knowing that it's somehow linked to the wolves. The realisation that the wolves tend to die about 10 years after their last shift throws open the question of whether its linked to the shifting or the underlying reason for the shifting (a wolf toxin/disease). This whole area is opened up by on the new wolves - Cole, lead singer of a rock band who decided to let Beck turn him - because he wants to escape his life and would rather be a wolf than kill himself.

I have to admit that for a large part of the book I really couldn't stand Cole - or Isabel for that matter. Isabel is full of rage for most of this book, which I guess is understandable. She's full of guilt as she feels she did nothing to try and save her brother Jack. Graces's parents were also another reason that I struggled a bit with this book as they suddenly seemed to wake up to the fact that they had a daughter and tried to ground her/forbid her to see Sam ever again blah, blah, blah.

The one reason that I kept reading was Sam. He really is one of the best characters I've ever come across. He can't quite believe that he is cured. His feeling of helplessness as he realised he was loosing Grace - one way or another, was heartbreaking. But he also faces the fact that his cure, isn't a cure - that in 10/15 years time (although as he got less years shifting I can't help thinking that he'd let less time with his 'cure' as well) he'd be in the same position as Grace.

Cole needs to figure this one out - he also needs to figure out if being a wolf is what he really wants, because I think he could be happy with Isabel.

First impressions: If there's one thing Maggie Stiefvater can do, it's write a good intro. I liked the tone of the prologue, setting us up for a not-so-happy ending. When the actual story begins, we pick up soon after the first book left off, and I thought things got going right away.

OMG I am so lucky i bougt the trilogy in one hit!
I have gone straight from this to the next in the series.
I am so addicted to this series right now.
I love how we got to know isabel a little more. i'm not sure about the introduction of cole. But my respect-o-meter went up after he was trying to logically find a cure.
and you know i think he will.
Poor sam. I almost cried, and i was almost heartbroken for him.
