ETA: I've continued reading this series and want to point out I gave books four and five considerably higher ratings. Four stars each.

I can't make up my mind what to rate this. The unforgiving and frustrated side of me wants to saddle it with a two. The part of me that loves depictions of the fae, their powers and lands leans towards a three for effort.
My problem with Rosemary and Rue is this: Nothing really happens.
Sure, there’s a lot of running around. Bullets ...more

I didn't like many things about this book but I enjoyed it anyhow. Isn't that weird?
The plot consisted of Toby getting hurt and somebody coming to her rescue. I guess the author didn't really have much of a plot so she filled it out with scenes of people trying to kill Toby. The world was interesting but complicated - I didn't fully understand what was happening sometimes - and I didn't like that Toby seemed so weak compared to others. Worse, the long discussion with the villain at the end was s ...more

I really enjoyed this first foray into October Daye's world. The pace was fast and furious, the close calls with death were numerous, the interesting colorful characters introduced plenty and the story interesting enough to make me keep listening.
I never was a big fan of fae and their world, but I liked Toby and the practical way she dealt with her problems, recognizing her limits and asking for help when she needed it, if only after all her other options were exhausted.

There are LOTS of urban fantasy books. Most of them are paranormal romances. I am not a fan of romance novels especially those where the main character pines for multiple studs. Sookie Stackhouse, I'm looking at you.
This thankfully was a good character. October Daye is a changeling (half fae) who has been through a very rough patch when the book starts. She's magically compelled to resume her old career as a detective to solve a murder of an elder Fae who she was friends with. Through the cours ...more

Oh my faerie! I loved this book. I think I've found a new favorite series.

First of all, I want my very own rose goblin. Those creatures are so creative and unique and I loved them!
It took me awhile to get into this one because there is a LOT of backstory before we get the plot moving. I kept waiting for the payoff but it’s clear that particular score won’t be settled for some time. The events definitely feed into Toby’s motivations so it’s not totally off-putting, but it made for a bit of a slog while reading at times.

I liked this story for the most part, but there were times I felt the story dragged until the next near-death experience in store for Toby. I thought a lot of the situations that Toby involved herself in were very reactive, especially for someone that has performed enough of a feat to get herself "knighted" (at one point the character even admits this). I don't expect characters that are perfect, but it's also difficult to read about one that has so much, but cannot see the forest for the trees

This book had a very slow start, but once it picked up, I liked it. I did kind of feel like we were dropped into the middle of the story (I felt like it needed more world-building background/explanations), but maybe that means future books in the series will flesh it out more. There were a lot of characters that helped the main heroine out and we weren't really told why or what their relationship to her was. I wasn't in love with this book like so many others, but I liked it well enough to conti

This is a difficult book to rate because I listened to it and the reader put me to sleep. The story was interesting and unique with quite a bit of excitment. Unfortunately, the heroine, who was supposed to be quite tough and be able to take care of herself kept getting hurt and needing to be rescued. She had so many friends helping her out of so many messes.
I will give book two a chance not as an audio book and see if I prefer reading it instead of listening to it.

Enjoyed it - loved the characters, (particularly Tybalt mmm!) and liked the world, quite a bit of description going on here but should balance out in book 2. Loved Toby's cats - and the rose-goblin - adorable! I didnt realise I was such a sucker for cats til I read about a cat-like creature and wanted to hug it DESPITE KNOWING IT WAS MADE OUT OF ROSE-THORNS. But really, it does sound cute, doesnt it? Will definately be picking up book 2.
