***3.5***
I enjoyed this book. I thought it was a solid introduction to this world and these characters. But I am being a little cautious in my review and my expectations as I move forward with the series, because there are some serious shades of Anita Blake at play here. Given that that series became a total crap-fest, it makes me nervous. Anyway, here's what we have:

This is the beginning of Percephone Alcmedi's story, a witch that finds her life changed in many ways, with her grandmother moving in with her and a task that goes against what she stands for.

Liked Persephone a lot, she is pretty passive and allows others to dictate her actions at the beginning of the book - she ends up contracted to kill someone (!) due to her reactive tendencies - but she gets it together late in the book, and I ended up liking both her and the story. Not sure about Johnny though, lying is a big turn-off.

I liked this book but I didn't love it. It had interesting characters and relationships, an interesting storyline and a hot werewolf/witch/vampire love triangle developing which I usually enjoy. I found the witchy parts to be (sometimes overly) detailed and well explained.
I liked it enough where I'll give the next one in the series a shot too, if nothing else to get some more Johnny in my life. ...more

Despite occasional lapses in writing quality, this book really picks up at the end. Overall, a strong opener in a series despite it's uneven writing.
